Abstract
The purpose of this report was tried to describe the problems, and to document the therapeutic results experienced during El Tor Cholera epide my 1969 in Korea.
1) It was found that about half of the cases isolated because of suspicious cases of Cholera during epidemics were non-choleraic severe gastroenteritis including infections of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Sihigella, Salmonella and other food poisonings prevalent usually in summer season.
2) The Cholera was difficult to differentiate from non-choleraic gastroenteritis without bacteriological confirmation, while the Cholera was more vigorous in symptoms, signs and laboratory findings that the non-choleraic.
3) The more excellent therapeutic results were obtained by the medical team composed of well-trained and energic medical personnels.
4) In the treatment of Cholera patient, as we know, rapid replacement of fluid and electrolytes, correction of acidosis and renal failure were the essential. Since the reduction of fluid requirement, rapid improvement of clinical symptoms and shortening of the duration of vibrio excretion were obtained, simultaneous antibiotic administrawere recommended.
5) The specific gravidity of whole blood and/or plasma must be measured for the purpose of dehydration as well as rehydration, however, clinical signs including pulse character, blood pressure and skin turgor were very helpful understanding the state of dehydration. Furthermore most of patient were recovered without fail, if these clinical signs were closely observed and adequately treated.
6) It was suggested that host factors were closely related to development of clinical manifestations.
7) It seemed that spreading pattern of this epidemic was not of water-borne, but of food-borne.
